Diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds are gemstones that are either set in jewellery or frequently sold as an investment. An investment in gemstones counts as an alternative speculation and differs from other forms of investment due to the product’s tangibility and the unique emotional value of gemstones.

Where can you buy gemstones?

Gemstones can be bought in an actual shop or online. For the most part, shops that sell gemstones are jewellers, where cut diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds are on sale. Several other stones, such as topaz, amethyst and tourmaline are often erroneously called gemstones too, whereas in reality these are mostly coloured minerals. Only diamond, sapphire, ruby and emerald count as gemstones as they possess a certain degree of hardness and are exceedingly rare.

You might also find gemstones such as emerald and ruby in mineral or spiritual shops. Please bear in mind that these usually won’t be investment gemstones, rather, lower quality stones that are used for their spiritual and symbolic significance. These minerals and gemstones are no less beautiful but do not possess the same financial worth as certified gemstones that you can buy from renowned jewellers.

Why buy gemstones online?

Gemstones can be sold or purchased online. The biggest advantage of buying online is that you aren’t limited to a specific location. In other words, you’re not reliant on your local jeweller for your foray into gemstone investment.

The ultimate return on your investment depends on a number of factors, among which the initial purchase price plays a role that certainly shouldn’t be underestimated. The higher the price in relation to the actual value of your gemstone, the harder it will subsequently be to sell your gemstone at a profit – a fact that we at BNT Diamonds understand all too well. Jewellers often form part of a larger distribution chain, with various intermediaries who each claim their margin on the gemstone before you, the end client, sees it in person. At BNT Diamonds we do things a little differently. We buy all our gemstones directly from source, with no intermediaries. Moreover, we have no large-scale stock (either in-store or online), but instead work on a request basis. This allows us to offer a wide selection of gemstones at the best price-quality ratio, so you can maximise your investment.

BNT Diamonds is a renowned jeweller in Antwerp, where you can buy gemstones, but online investment purchases are also readily accessible too. Browse our range of individual diamonds on our shop page, read about our investment packages, or request a quote.

Individual gemstones or set in jewellery

An investment in gemstones opens up subsequent opportunities. On one hand, you could decide to invest in individual gemstones. On the other, you could have your gemstone set in jewellery, at no detriment to its intrinsic value. Gemstones also have symbolic significance and a unique aesthetic that can be jointly shown to great advantage in a piece of jewellery. Such an investment in gemstones comprises a rare investment, one with emotional value.

What to look out for when buying gemstones?

If you’re looking to buy gemstones as an investment, we recommend purchasing a cut stone. A raw diamond, or other raw gemstone, may be lower in purchase price but quality assessment of a raw gemstone demands considerable in-depth expertise. The true value of your purchase is therefore, far less transparent. Moreover, a raw gemstone loses a significant share of its original carat mass during the cutting process.

One of the key things to look out for when buying your gemstone as an investment, is the certificate. After all, the price of a gemstone is determined by its worth. This in turn depends on factors such as the carat mass, clarity, colour and cut quality – also known as the 4 Cs. Equally important is that this certificate is issued by accredited laboratories, such as the GIA, HRD or IGI. The GemLab is frequently use for gemstones. After all, such a certificate proves the gemstone’s authenticity, and enables you to track its value. At BNT Diamonds we only buy certified gemstones for maximum surety.
