Synthetic or natural diamonds? And what is the difference?

13 Jul 21

Diamonds are formed under high pressure deep under the earth's mantle. This compression of carbon can also be created artificially in a laboratory. What is the difference between natural and synthetic diamonds? Is there any difference for you as an investor?

  • Why should I purchase natural investment diamonds?

What are synthetic diamonds?

The physical, chemical and optical characteristics of a synthetic diamond and a natural diamond are indentical. Synthetic diamonds are not ‘fake’, they are still ‘real’ diamonds. They are, however, artificially created in a laboratory. BNT Diamonds does not offer synthetic diamonds, not even on request, as natural diamonds have a much higher emotional and financial value. This makes natural stones better suited as investment diamonds.

Synthetic diamonds are provided with a certificate that confirms their synthetic origin and can be sold by jewelers. Note that the naked eye cannot distinguish any difference between the natural diamond and the artificial one.

How are synthetic diamonds made?

There are two methods of creating synthetic diamonds. These methods reproduce synthetic diamonds using the same conditions as with natural diamonds.

  • HPHT (high pressure, high temperature): Using the HPHT method, the crystallization of a pure form of graphite powder is caused artificially in a sealed place.
  • CVD (chemical vapor deposition): In the CVD method, a substrate from a natural diamond or a synthetic diamond is put in a kind of microwave. This will serve as the basis of a new synthetic diamond.

How do synthetic diamonds differ from fake diamonds?

Synthetic diamonds should not be confused with fake diamonds. Artificial diamonds are real diamonds, but created by humans using industrial tools. The physical, chemical and optical characteristics are identical to diamonds who are mined.

Fake diamonds have the same physical characteristics as natural diamonds, but their chemical characteristics are totally different. In case of doubt it is therefore always advisable to consult a gemologist.

Which impact do synthetic diamonds have on the jewellery market?

The African continent supplies 60% of the rough diamonds used in the global production. For many African countries such as Congo, Angola, South-Africa, Namibia or Sierra Leone, the diamond industry is their main source of income. The Indian diamond association Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council estimates the annual production of synthetic diamonds to be around 350.000 carat, versus around 150 million carat for natural diamonds.

Compared to natural diamonds, synthetic diamonds are cheaper because they are sold for a lower price. Their steady increasing production concerns both NGO´s as well the African countries that produce them.

Why should I purchase natural investment diamonds?
