What Determines the Quality of a Diamond? | BNT Diamonds

What determines the quality of a diamond?

The quality of diamonds is determined by the 4 C’s which describe each stone in great detail to outline its unique qualities and overall value. These descriptions are important to consider before choosing the right diamonds to invest in. .

What are the 4 C’s, and what do they stand for?

The 4 C’s stand for carat, colour, clarity, and cut. Let’s look at each in a bit more detail.

Carat

Carats refer to and determine the weight of a diamond. The larger the stone, the more carats it has. Similarly, as the carat weight increases, typically so does the price of that diamond.

Colour

Diamonds come in a variety of colours, including yellow, black, blue, brown, and more. But there is also a colour gradient for colourless diamonds, on a scale from D to Z (colourless to yellowish).

Clarity

As each diamond is unique, most have individual impurities, called inclusions, which can disrupt the shine and sparkle of the stone. A clarity rating determines how brilliant the diamond is taking these impurities into account.

Cut

Diamonds can be cut into a range of shapes, including round, cushion, pear, princess, and more. But, experts can determine the quality of a diamond’s cut, which can further solidify that stone’s value.

When combined, these characteristics give an idea of the quality and value of a diamond. The 4 C’s are also used to identify stones because these descriptors outline each diamond’s unique characteristic.
