Diamond, gold, platinum or art? Which investment is profitable?

  • How to compare the market value of multiple investment possibilities?
  • Which diamonds are best?
  • Should we all be buying loose diamonds?

The trend to transfer money into tangible wealth, such as diamonds, has once again gained popularity over the decades. However, buying loose diamonds as an investment is old news. Throughout history, prominent people have used precious stones to visualize and measure their wealth. Today it is obviously not necessary to exchange these diamonds for boats or your life. But why has the interest in buying loose diamonds still increased?

A big advantage of buying loose diamonds is the ease with which you can store and move them. In case of emergency, this type of wealth can be transported easily and very discreetly. But there is more. When you compare the market value of multiple tangible forms of wealth, the diamond has the highest score. Of course, you must keep different factors in mind when making a concrete and convincing comparison. For example, you should redirect the price or value of each item to a standard measure.

Diamonds have a standard conversion from carat to gram. Gold and platinum are also easy to redirect, so the challenge of such comparison lies in the addition of an art object. It is almost crazy when you discover how much value 1 gram pink or blue diamond has in comparison to the other mentioned investment possibilities. Two years ago, a coloured diamond and a painting of Picasso were the winners of this comparison that is repeated every year. Gold and platinum had a further setback and colourless diamonds remained stable.

Should we all be buying loose diamonds in order to enjoy the profitability? We were talking about coloured diamonds as the winners in the above-mentioned comparison. Investments in coloured diamonds increase exceptionally. The reason for this is the record-breaking prices that those coloured diamonds have provided on auctions these past couple of years. Whoever starts with buying loose diamonds, however, should rather focus on the guaranteed merchantability than on the exceptional resale price. For this, white diamonds with D, E, F and G colour are usually more qualified. And yes, they still do better than the other investment possibilities from our comparison.
