Everyone knows the classic, colourless diamond. Most people are also familiar with yellow and pink diamonds, but did you know there are brown, green, blue, and even black diamonds? The black diamonds are rather special because they’re fully opaque, unlike all other colours. So what else makes black diamonds so unique, and when should you make a black diamond investment? Keep reading to find out.

What are black diamonds?

Large black diamonds of a good cut quality can be very valuable. However, they’ll always be more affordable than most other coloured diamonds because they sparkle much less. Instead of reflecting the light, they absorb it, but they still can be set into beautiful diamond jewellery.

Natural black diamonds are only found in a few diamond mines in Brazil and Central Africa. According to some, black diamonds are found much deeper in the Earth than other diamonds and are created between 140 and 190 kilometres below the surface. High pressure and the temperatures at those depths would give them their unique colour.

What’s the difference between black diamonds and colourless diamonds?

Colourless diamonds

Black diamonds and colourless diamonds are very similar. The specific process that gives black diamonds their unique opaque colour is not fully understood. There are many different hypotheses regarding the creation of the natural black diamond, but there’s no consensus. The theory that has the most support worldwide is that the black colour is caused by the presence of graphite in the crystal structure during the formation of the stone.

Such graphite particles aren't present in colourless diamonds. That’s the only difference between colourless and black diamonds.

Should I choose a black diamonds investment?

Coloured diamonds in different shapes

Pink, red, and blue diamonds are still considered the best investment diamonds. Their extreme rarity will provide a faster and larger return on investment than other colours. However, they’re more difficult to sell in comparison to white diamonds due to their high value. Coloured diamonds are also more popular than black diamonds due to their brighter shine.

Black diamonds can be a good investment if the gem is reasonably large or has a characteristic that can create a great demand on the market, such as a special cut or a truly unique hue within the black spectrum.

Natural, unprocessed black diamonds fall into a lower price category than other coloured diamonds. The purchase price for 1.00 ct. will be around €2,000 and €4,000, making investing in diamonds much more accessible if you’re new to the sector.
